The 2025 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback has long been the defining nameplate in the wagon class. When it was introduced 30 years ago, it was Subaru’s entry into the sport utility segment, but with a twist – more efficient and maneuverable than truck-based SUVs, while just as capable! After three decades, the 2025 Subaru Outback still provides the same level of rugged bang-for-the-buck as it always has.

Performance Features

A pair of engines are available under the hood of the 2025 Subaru Outback. The base 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine turns out 176 lb-ft of torque, good for towing up to 2700 pounds. It’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard across the line-up. The available turbocharged 2.4-liter engine provides 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft or torque, providing better acceleration and upping the towing capabilities to 3500 pounds. This engine gets a fuel economy of 22 MPG city and 29 MPG highway; the base engine gets 26 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. The Wilderness trim gets off-road improvements on top of the turbocharged engine, but this pushes the fuel economy down to 21 MPG city and 26 MPG highway.

Style and Technology

The low-slung wagon look has been consistent throughout the generations of the Subaru Outback, drawing inspiration from hiking boots. Cladding surrounds the bottom edges, creeping up from under the front fascia towards the grille.

Inside, seating for five is offers front seat passengers 40.1 inches of headroom, which drops to 39.1 inches with the available moonroof, while second-row passengers get 39.1 inches of headroom across the line-up. Legroom is excellent, with 42.8 inches in the front row and 39.5 inches in the second row. For hauling gear, the hatch opens up to 32.6 cubic feet of space, which can be expanded to 75.6 cubic feet with the second-row seats lowered.

The base 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration standard, while an 11.6-inch upgraded version is optional, with or without navigation. The 7.0-inch is only available with a 4-speajer audio system, while the 11.6-inch display some with either a 6-speaker system or a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system. Multiple USB ports are standard along with BlueTooth wireless phone and audio.

Safety

Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology suite of driver assistance system is standard on every 2025 Subaru Outback. This suite brings together systems including Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure with Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Braking, Automatic Emergency Steering and Pre-Collision Throttle Management to help prevent or mitigate collisions. Other standard safety features include pedestrian detection, a rearview camera and a rear-seat alert. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a distraction mitigation system.

Trim Levels

Six trims are available on the 2025 Subaru Outback – two are available only with the base engine, three are available with either engine and the Wilderness trim is available only with the turbocharged powerplant.

The Outback Base trim sticks to the basics, sitting on 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, while black raised roof rails provide extra carrying capacity. Cloth upholstery surrounds the interior, and the front seats are manually adjustable. Automatic climate control offers basic comfort. Optional features include durable all-weather floor liners, a cargo net, sunshades and an array of interior and exterior options that provide for great personalization.

Also only available with the base engine, the Premium trim adds plenty of conveniences inside and out. The steering wheel and shifter handle are wrapped in leather, and the driver’s seat gets power adjustability while both front seats get heating. A hands-free power rear gate is optional for easier loading and unloading, while the optional power tilt and sliding moonroof opens up the interior.

Available with either the base or turbocharged unit, the Onyx Edition gets the moonroof and power rear gate standard. Outside, the wheels are upgraded to 18-inch alloys with black finish. Synthetic leather upholstery lines the heated seats, while a heated steering wheel is included. With the turbocharged engine, the passenger seat gets eight-way power adjustability and both rear outboard seats are heated. The Harman Kardon audio system is standard.

Off-road centered, and only available with the turbocharged unit, the Wilderness trim builds on the Premium trim. Unique Wilderness design accents feature inside and out, including hexagonal LED fog lights, black-finish folding side mirrors and raised roof rails. Dual-function X-Mode driving and a higher ground clearance prepare it for off-road travel, as do the all-terrain tires that come standard.

Limited trims come with either engine and adds safety features including blind-spot monitoring and evasive steering assist. Genuine leather upholstery lines the seats, and the driver’s seat gets 12-way power adjustability with memory settings. Outside, the trim gets black, machine-finished 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

At the top of the trim range, the Touring is also available with either engine. A universal garage door opener and a front-view camera are provided. Nappa leather upholstery adds an upscale touch, while ventilated front seats add to the level of comfort.

The 2025 Subaru Outback continues to provide a useful, reliable, outdoorsy vehicle with a variety of trims, ready to meet the needs of rugged off-roaders and refined weekend trail runners alike. Schedule a test drive today at Delaney Subaru!
